Lifestyle Habits That Can Lead to Weight Gain

Obesity rates have been increasing over the past few decades throughout the world and it is clear that people's changing lifestyle habits have had a significant role to play. This article examines some of the lifestyle habits which can lead to weight gain and may have contributed to society's obesity problem.

Obesity rates have reached an almost epidemic level, and so clearly the issue of weight is no longer just an individual's concern. The prevalence of obesity has significance for society as a whole, as politicians grapple with the ramifications of a society in which people are getting so heavy that their weight is undermining their health and making it impossible for them to work. It cannot be ignored that people's lifestyles have changed profoundly over the past few decades and that there is a link between lifestyle habits and weight gain.

Technology has obviously had a real impact on the way people live their lives. In the past, you didn't have the option of driving because it was too expensive to keep your own car and there was always the option of using public transport. However, as funding for public services dwindled, car ownership was no longer a luxury, but a necessity. If you live in the suburbs and have to travel into the city to get to work, it may not be practical to walk in or take your bicycle and if you work long hours, you may not have much opportunity to get any exercise.

Clearly, lack of time has a role to play in why people are gaining weight, since people work long hours, usually in jobs which require very little energy expenditure. The trouble is that even when people find spare time, the chances are they would prefer to watch television, or mess about on the Internet or play computer games than do something more active. When there are so many options in terms of how to spend your time, you may not always go for the one that is best for you, especially if everyone you know also avoids exercise.

Unfortunately, if you lead a sedentary lifestyle and never bother to exercise, but eat large quantities of junk food, as many people do, it obviously becomes harder to control your weight. Many people turn to junk food without bothering to consider the nutritional content, because it tastes good; it's cheap and can be eaten whilst you're on the move. You can nibble biscuits and chocolate without realising just how many calories you're consuming. If it's an excessive number, however, the end result is weight gain.

Many people do not eat the traditional three meals a day and instead grab food whenever they feel like it, grazing on snack foods in between convenience meals and fast food. If you eat such a diet, then it is no surprise if you find yourself gaining weight. This is clearly an issue that many people struggle with. It doesn't help that some people use food to help them deal with other issues in their life. If you turn to food when you're feeling depressed or stressed, then it is going to be a challenge to control your weight.

Plus, your body chemistry changes when you're faced with stressful situations, as cortisol production increases, which can in turn fuel weight gain. If you're eating a poor diet, snacking frequently and serving large quantities at meal times without burning off the calories provided through exercise, you're going to gain weight. Thus, to avoid this situation, you have to break from these lifestyle habits and make an effort to increase your activity levels and rein in your eating to bring your calorie intake down to a more sensible level, so that you don't have to find yourself in the position of being classed as obese.
