How to Scale Obesity

Obesity is one of leading avertible causes of death worldwide. The article covers the definition of obesity, causes and health risks, ways of scaling obesity, mortality reports, and prevention.

Doctors define obesity as a medical condition where excessive fat has accumulated on the body, that it is causing adverse effect on a person. Wherein, it may lead to several health problems, and reduce a person's life expectancy.

Amongst the diseases incorporated with obesity are type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties, becoming less active, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis, and of course the main culprit, heart ailments. Studies suggest that obesity is caused by a wrong diet and insufficient exercise. There are also cases where obesity in a person is more likely than others, meaning, some people are just prone to obesity.

In the last case mentioned above, obesity is genetic. It is not uncommon to find obese parents having obese children. Or if their children are not, it is very likely that they will be, as their body has genetic tendencies of obesity.

Scaling Obesity thru Body Mass Index

There are several ways to scale body fat. It isn't hard to recognize obesity either.

First on the list is BMI or the Body Mass Index, where obesity is measured by dividing body mass by squared height in meters. In equation, it looks like this, BMI = kg ÷ m squared.

Afterwards the results are classified from underweight to class 3 obesity, as seen in the figures below.

18.5 or less -  underweight

18.5 to 24.9 - normal weight

25.0 to 29.9 - overweight

30.0 to 34.9 - class 1 obesity

35.0 to 39.9 - class 2 obesity

40 and above - class 3 obesity

There are other ways of measuring obesity, however, not as accurate as the Body Mass Index. You can use height and weight tables, or use waist measurements to measure body fat percentage. Other schemes of measuring body fat works the same way, but is never actually reliable in a matter of speaking. People tend to look for what is obvious even though BMI would have resulted differently.

Obesity is known as one of the leading avertible causes of death. In the US alone, obesity is the cause of 112,000 to 365,000 deaths each year. In European countries, obesity kills a million per year.

Scientific studies also prove that smoking has a major role to play in those figures. Death rate is considerably lower in non-smokers than in current smokers, even if they are both in the same BMI classification.

The good thing is, obesity can be prevented. It is never too late to move about and lose your excess pounds.
